Armor Comparison? - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
If I remember right, steel plate has the same armor value as orcish but weighs a bit more. Oh, and steel plate is on the light armor side and I have a theory as to why. Over time the light armor side gets 3 (since plain steel is on both sides) heavy armors. My theory is that its meant for light armor characters that have a heavy armor follower.

Steel plate (not just steel) is under Advanced Armors on the light side of the Smithing tree also, if you didnt already know. Enchanting at 100 with the perks to raise armor enchantments will give you 25% on each piece of gear. So thats ring, gloves, armor and necklace (may be more)

If you are in PC you can also use the mod Silver Knight Armor that is basically a shining version of Steel Plate Armor. I use it in my paladin, with Dawnguard shield. But Dawnguard is also good, specially if you have the mod Dawnguard Paladin Armor, that allows you to craft a golden and a silver version of the Dawnguard Armor. Fits perfectly too.

Shields only factor in on blocking. You can use a shield even with mage armor and not affect the perks. Mixing heavy or light armor shields doesn't effect light armor or heavy armor perks. So mix and match away. I like spell breaker for it's mage busterness.

My dragon plate is 50+ points better as a set than daedric and I still need to upgrade the boots. The Skyrim Wiki and my own experience can confirm this. DRAGON PLATE IS THE BEST HEAVY ARMOR!
